Environmental Journalism is a significant, stimulating and valuable subject of study, which lies at the intersection of politics, economics, science, nature and culture, between the individual and collective dimensions, and also between the local, regional and global levels. Climate change is one of the great issues of our time, which makes teaching how to deal with environmental issues a main concern for professionals, media companies and journalism teachers.
During the Annual General Meeting 2024, it was possible to see first-hand how complex the topic can be in terms of professional practices, but even more its integration and teaching in the various journalism classes of European schools/universities.
A number of main themes emerged from the discussion panel: on the one hand there is the issue of what environmental journalism is, mainly related to the professional aspects as to which fields Environmental Journalism (EJ) should cover and which not. On the other hand, there is the integration of EJ within journalism courses: should it be an integral part of the training curriculum?
Both aspects proposed will guide the next Teachers’ Training, with the aim of exploring in depth the teaching practices of environmental journalism and understanding which are the most effective ways to educate in this practice.
Therefore, we invite professionals and researchers to submit papers, presentations, workshops and best practices that focus on:
– Proposals from teachers and professionals to approach environmental journalism teaching;
– Clues from scientific research on environmental journalism;
– Acknowledgement of impacts on public opinion;
– Promotion of a context for debate and discussion on the ‘right ways’ of approaching environmental journalism.
Send your proposal and give a short description (one paragraph) to Christian Ruggiero christian.ruggiero@uniroma1.it and director@ejta.eu BEFORE 10 March 2025. Can’t wait to see you in Rome!
