Last week WJEC got the message that Edith Cowan University is terminating the agreement to host the 7th World Journalism Education Congress. Regrettably, they had to pull out because the estimate was that the congress would make a considerable financial loss. The low number of submissions were not what they were expecting, and if the event was to run it would see the budget in red, and affect the reputation of both ECU and WJEC.
The WJEC Steering Committee acted swiftly to this unfortunate turn of events. WJEC had contacted the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) to discuss the option to move the 7th World Journalism Education Congress to San Francisco. The AEJMC has responded immediately and enthusiastically and today both parties will sign the Memorandum of Understanding.
This means that:
-
- 2025 WJEC will be held in San Francisco on August 8-10, 2025. The Location will be the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, 780 Mission Street, San Francisco, California 94103.
-
- 2025 WJEC will be held parallel to and – as far as possible – in conjunction with the annual conference of AEJMC.
-
- The theme of the congress will be: “Is it time to reboot journalism education?”
-
- The programme will have the usual structure, with Plenaries, Paper presentations, Panels and Syndicates.
-
- The deadline for submitting an abstract is extended. The new deadline is 31st of December, 2 p.m., San Francisco Time (PST). Go to the abstract submission platform: https://cmt3.research.microsoft.com/WJEC2025. Ignore references to the former location and time.
-
- The call for Panels and the call for Syndicates will go out on the 6th of January 2025.
-
- Registration will open mid-April 2025. The early bird registration rate (through July 15, 2025) will be approx. $290 USD, and the regular registration rate (after July 16) will be $340 USD. The fee covers all Congress activities, and also entry to the AEJMC Conference, but no coffee breaks and meals. Delegates will be responsible for their own housing and transportation.
