EJTA Mid Career Meeting in Vienna

The EJTA  mid career group held its annual meeting on 9th and 10th of December in Vienna.  Apart from the AGM the directors of the mid career institutions meet once a year to share their experiences and to discuss questions of journalism training.

Elisabeth Wasserbauer, managing director of the Kuratorium für Journalistenausbildung, Austria organized and hosted the meeting in Vienna.

One topic of the agenda was a visit of “Der Standard”, an Austrian Quality Newspaper, including a discussion about the newsroom strategy with editor in chief Alexandra Föderl–Schmid and foreign affairs editor Christoph Prantner. The members had the opportunity to visit the integrated newsroom and to discuss the cooperation between the newspaper staff and online editorial staff. Also very interesting was the talk with columnist Hans Rauscher about his ideas of community management in a modern newspaper.

Another topic on the agenda was the visit of the TV station “Puls 4”, which belongs to the Pro Sieben/Sat 1 media holding. Program Director Oliver Svec and Info Director Corinna Milborn guided the EJTA members and discussed with them the information strategy of a private television station in Austria. Puls 4 broadcasts daily three hours of breakfast television for Pro Sieben, Sat 1 and four hours for themselves. In the evening, they also broadcast a one hour news show. Internships are considered one of the key elements of staff recruitment. Journalism education and training at Puls 4 is mostly organized as in-house training in order to meet the special needs of the company.

Furthermore the members discussed the question whether it would be meaningful that mid career institutions or journalism schools of single press groups or broadcasting companies could become members of EJTA. Everyone agreed that it would indeed make sense to invite such schools to become members of EJTA.
